ProtectMiChild is a free and secure program offered by the Michigan Secretary of State. Its mission is to shield children from inappropriate ads that might pop up on their devices via social media, text messages, or email.

How Does It Work?

Register Online: Parents register their children’s social media handles, phone numbers, and email addresses. Once registered, the program blocks ads for products like alcohol, tobacco, pornography, and online gambling from reaching your child’s devices.

Age Appropriate Ad Blocking: Once registered, the service will block adult internet ads for three years or until the child user turns 18. Registrations can be renewed at any time for an additional three-year period.

Browse as Usual: Social media can be registered without affecting the way the apps are used and children’s information will remain private.

Comprehensive Protection:

The registry is kept up to date and includes popular platforms like Snapchat, Instagram, and Twitter. YouTube, TikTok, Discord and Twitch were added in April of 2023.

This is mandatory for advertisers: Online advertisers must comply with the registry, failure to comply results in fines and penalties.
